Smart Swaps for Hot Buttered Rum
Rum Options:
Spiced rum → Dark rum (more vanilla and spice notes)
Captain Morgan → Other rums (sweeter, works great)
Bourbon → Rum (different but delicious)
Brandy → Rum (richer, more complex)
Sugar Alternatives:
White sugar → Brown sugar (less molasses flavor)
Maple syrup → Brown sugar (use ½ cup, more maple taste)
Coconut sugar → Brown sugar (less sweet, healthier)
Honey → Sugar (different consistency, thinner)
Spice Changes:
Pumpkin pie spice → Individual spices (easier, similar flavor)
Apple pie spice → Cinnamon/nutmeg blend (works in a pinch)
Double the cinnamon → Skip other spices (simpler version)
Add cardamom → More complex flavor
Liquid Swaps:
Hot apple cider → Hot water (sweeter, more flavorful)
Hot milk → Hot water (creamier, richer)
Coffee → Water (makes it a spiced coffee drink)

Kai and My Accidental Discovery
Three months ago, I was making hot buttered rum batter when Kai was helping me measure the brown sugar. I told him to pack it into the measuring cup and he packed it so hard he broke the cup. Then he dumped in way more sugar than two cups because he "had to use a different measuring thing." I was annoyed because now the batter would be way too sweet.
Wrong. That extra sugar made the drink taste more like butterscotch candy rich and caramelly instead of just buttery. My husband had two mugs and said "this tastes like melted caramel" and asked what I changed. Now I always use at least 2.5 cups of brown sugar instead of 2 for this best hot buttered rum recipe. Kai tells everyone he "invented the extra-sweet version" and honestly, that sugar overload made it taste way more indulgent.
Kai's other trick? He figured out that if you add a tiny pinch of salt to each mug, it makes the sweetness taste better. I thought he was crazy, but now we always add salt and the warm spiced rum beverage tastes more balanced.
